2013 MACHIAS RIVER RACE... BENEFITTING THE DOWN EAST LAKES LAND TRUST

2013 MACHIAS RIVER RACE... BENEFITTING THE DOWN EAST LAKES LAND TRUST

29 JANUARY 2013

A LETTER FROM THE MACHIAS RIVER CANOE RACE DIRECTOR

Mark, Dave and Matt:

I am attaching a copy of the 2013 informational sheet for the Machias River Race.

We are pleased to announce that the  Downeast Lakes Trust   is the race beneficiary this year.  DLT is a great cause and gives us all the more reason to make it a “profitable” year.

DIRIGO Search and Rescue has been providing competent safety and comprehensive emergency planning for our paddlers for many years.  We appreciate DIRIGO’s efforts and we are thankful for their assistance again this year!

2012 Machias River race

2012 Machias River race

5 MAY 2012

It was starting to look like a possible cancelation of the Machias River Race this year, then we got 2" of rain just in the nick of time and the river was roaring. After last years race we had hopes of filling the Wilderness Lodge with paddlers this year but  with just a week till race time we had only one room booked. Then the skies opened up and the next day the phone started to ring. We ended up with a full house.

Lisa and I met a group of really fun people all of whom enjoyed the lodge very much. They stayed with us the night before the race and we all enjoyed a great pot luck supper and an evening in front of the big fieldstone fireplace, a few tall tales were shared. In the morning racers had only a 2 mile drive to the finish line on the river. The start of the race was up stream 10 miles. All who came said they  had a great time and will be back next year, so it looks like a tradition has been born.

2011 Bear season

2011 Bear season

19 Sept 2011

Where to start.... My only regret this year was the lack of hunters. I had the fewest amount of sports that I've had in a long time, only 12. When you run 32 sites and have 32  stands set up, you want to fill them all. Oh well, next year is already starting to fill up so 2012 should be better.

The lack of hunters certainly was not matched by the lack of bears. 1st week, 8 hunters saw 24 bears! We killed 4 and a few nice bears were passed up. The biggest of the week was taken Thursday by Alan Whitter of Massachusetts. Alan made a great shot allowing the big 325 lb boar only 2 steps after he fired before dropping. Good Job Alan...

Opening night 2 nice bear were harvested, one 221 lbs and one 181 lbs. The pic above is of the 221. The 221 was taken by Tommy from Texas and Pete from Holyoke Mass tagged the 181.
